June 29, 2015 - "Sandals Pitstop" : )
My sandals have to be repaired. In Samorin I find a shoemaker. While working on my shoes she tells me that the average salary of the people here is around 400 Euros per month. She and her husband were paying 250 Euros for a two-room flat plus 70 Euros for electricity. What is left for daily life? The roads become worse and worse the deeper we cycle into the country. People dump their garbage at the road sides, we see many decaying buildings. Today we camp in a private garden.
This is how some people make additional money. In this village the EU built showers and toilets along the bike road. In the morning I wanted to take a shower and then found out that the water seemed to be in the boiler for a long time, unused. It was stinking. I denied myself a shower with hot water and used only the cold. My traveling partner had recognized the same, but he took a shower and then even brushed his teeth. Two days later he suffered from a diarrhea. We suppose that the stinking water was the reason. The next night too we camped on the private property of an Italian married to a Slowakian woman. They took care of us wonderfully, served an appetizer (antipasti) and Spaghetti Carbonara as well as a tasty breakfast..
Our plan was to reach Budapest on this day. Hans got sick this morning, which made it impossible to ride.
